A. Paleckis Has Paid the Fine and Is Grateful for the Huge Solidarity; Regains the Right to Participate in the Parliamentary Elections

   The Chairman of the Socialist People’s Front (Lithuania) Algirdas Paleckis has paid the fine of 10 400 litas (3000 euros) that was imposed on him by the Court for his independent opinion concerning the events of the 13th of January, 1991.

   “I would like to express my gratitude to all of the people who helped me with the payment of the 10 400 litas fine which I had received for my independent opinion concerning the 13th of January. I am surprised in a pleasant way of the huge solidarity which was actually expressed by comrades, brothers in arms, people I know and also people I don't know, but who hold the same views as I do. Your solidarity is the sign that the freedom of opinion and the historical truth are important to the people. It is a sign, that penalties are not able to abolish the desire of the people to know the truth and to spread it,”- commented A. Paleckis.

   After having paid the fine with more than 65 days left until the elections, A. Paleckis regains the right to participate in the Parliamentary elections on the 14th of October.

   The 3rd Congress of the Socialist People’s Front that took place at the end of July decided that the SPF will participate in the elections as a party, and will also have its candidates in the single-seat constituencies.

   A. Paleckis is going to make an appeal to the Highest Court concerning his fine, and in case of such necessity – to the Human Right’s court in Strasbourg.
