The WFTU Demands from the Authorities of Kazakhstan the Recognition of ZHANARTU

   Athens, Greece, February 22nd, 2013

   The World Federation of Trade Unions stands in solidarity with its affiliate in Kazakhstan “Zhanartu” in its continuing struggle against the efforts of the authorities of Kazakhstan to block the trade union action and to prevent the legal action of the trade union movement.

   These efforts cannot stop the need of workers to organize and struggle jointly for their labour and social rights. These efforts will be in vain.

   Zhanartu was born though strong and bloody struggles of the workers of Kazakhstan in November 29th, 2010. Since then the Ministry of Justice has repeatedly refused to grant legal registration to the union.

   The 8th and final refusal was received on February 2013 on the basis that a “Civil Committee for the defense of the workers in industry, the budget sector, agricultural complex and services ‘Zhanartu’” was registered on August 26th, 2012 making it impossible for a union with the identical name to be registered.

   The manufactured non-existing clone organization is just another effort by the authorities of Kazakhstan to block the legal action of the union whilst legalizing the persecution, arrests and terrorism against the trade unionists that “instigate strikes” and create “illegal trade unions”.

   The World Federation of Trade Unions calls the authorities in Kazakhstan to respect the trade union rights, end the persecution of trade unionists and accept the legal registration of the trade union.
