WFDY on Jammu-Kashmir

   We observe with concern the decision of the Indian Government to revoke the Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which granted special autonomy status to the Jammu-Kashmir.

   It is clear that the Indian Government has made this move unconstitutionally and undemocratically. Jammu-Kashmir has been granted autonomy under Indian Constitution by Article 370 for about 70 years, except in the matters of defense, communications and foreign affairs. However, now the Indian Government has deployed hundreds of thousands of military troops to Jammu-Kashmir and has blocked Kashmir from all means of communications.

   We consider this as a gross violation of Human Rights and we condemn the restrictions imposed on the Right of Movement, arresting and detention, suppression and police violence on the people of Jammu-Kashmir. At the same time, the Indian Government must comprehend the threat that this move will pose on the regional peace and harmony. Given the political tensions between Pakistan and India this matter has highly sensitive impacts on the people in Jammu-Kashmir, India as well as Pakistan. Therefore, Indian Government must not overlook on the matters which can have a huge impact on the peace of the Asia-Pacific region and thereby on the World Peace.

   As an international organization who struggles for lasting peace, WFDY condemns the undemocratic decision of Indian Government to revoke the autonomous status of the Jammu-Kashmir and we vehemently condemn the suppression on Jammu-Kashmir people.
