WFDY on Greek-American Agreement

   #WFDY observes with concern the developments around the upcoming visit of the US minister of foreign affairs in #Greece. Mr #Pompeo is visiting Greece in order to sign the “Mutual Defence Cooperation Agreement” between the two countries.

   As the foreign ministry of the US states, “Greece has been an ally to the U.S. in promoting Balkan stability and economic development…. Greece’s geostrategic position also makes it an important ally in engagement and dialogue throughout the Eastern Mediterranean… The U.S.-Greece mutual defense cooperation agreement provides for the operation by the United States of a naval support facility at the deep-water port and airfield at Souda Bay in Crete. Greece contributes to NATO operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo…” The experience that peoples have from the military interventions of the #USA makes clear what #imperialists mean when they are talking about “Balkan stability”, “dialogue throughout the Eastern Mediterranean” and “contribution in Afghanistan and Kosovo operations”.

   Furthermore, the current government in Greece, is willing to sign an agreement, which will give to NATO, “undetermined” presence in the country.

   The World Federation of Democratic Youth salutes the #struggle of the peace-loving youth of Greece which is developing series of actions, with our member organisation there, the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE), at the forefront. We stand by side with our brothers and sisters and we denounce the Greek-American “Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement”. We demand for the agreement not to be renewed and for the immediate shut down of the base of Souda and any other US-NATO bases in the country. We reject any participation of the Greek Armed Forces in imperialist missions abroad released from #NATO and the EU.
